  • NV12 averages 12 bits per pixel with 4:2:0 sampling, storing all the brightness values first and the color values after.
  • MJPEG compresses each frame, which is how a 4K stream fits down a link that raw video would overflow.

Run the arithmetic and the constraint appears. At 16 bits per pixel, a 3840 by 2160 frame at 30 frames per second needs about 3.98 gigabits per second. In NV12 the same stream needs about 2.99. USB 3.2 Gen 1 signals at 5 gigabits per second, so uncompressed 4K just fits, with nothing to spare. Plain USB 2.0 runs at 480 megabits per second — less than half of what uncompressed 1080p at 30 frames per second needs, which is about 995 megabits per second.

Razer publishes the consequence itself on its flagship. The Kiyo Pro Ultra captures raw 4K at 30 frames per second, and Razer states that this converts to uncompressed 4K at 24 frames per second, 1440p at 30, or 1080p at 60. The sensor did not change between those three lines. The link did. A “4K webcam” is a camera that can reach 4K under conditions the listing does not always spell out.

Sensor size decides more than the resolution does

Resolution counts pixels. Sensor size decides how much light each of those pixels gets, and that is what separates a clean picture from a grainy one in a room lit by a single lamp.

Razer publishes the full set on its top model: a 1/1.2-inch Sony Starvis 2 sensor with a 2.9 micrometer pixel size behind an F/1.7 lens, and the company’s own claim of 3.9 times more light than other webcams. That is Razer’s figure about Razer’s product, so treat it as a manufacturer claim rather than an independent measurement — but the sensor dimension and the pixel pitch behind it are hard numbers, and they are the reason such a claim is possible at all.

Logitech’s published datasheet for the business version of its MX Brio gives an 8.5-megapixel Sony STARVIS sensor. That number is worth pausing on, because 4K is 8.29 megapixels. An 8.5-megapixel sensor has almost no pixels to spare once it is filling a 4K frame, which is why the same datasheet lists a 4x digital zoom rather than an optical one. Digital zoom is a crop, and a crop on a sensor with no headroom costs real detail.

Both approaches have a catch in the same place: the software. Logitech’s own footnotes say its auto framing needs the companion app, that the feature is not available on computers with ARM processors, and that the app’s features are unavailable on ChromeOS. Razer’s AI effects likewise live in its desktop software. If your machine is the one the app does not support, you have bought a camera whose most advertised feature will not turn on.
